FIVE STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE NOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR A SPRING SALE

Were you disappointed when the ground hog saw his shadow last week? I live on a farm in the Columbia River Gorge just outside of Washougal, and while it offers beautiful views and quiet country living, six more weeks of cold winter wind has me wishing for Spring flowers. 

But, there’s a bright side to six more weeks of winter. You can use this extra time to prepare your home for sale if you’re thinking of making a move in the Spring. Here are five tips to help you get ready now so that you can act fast when buyers come out from a long winter’s nap.    

START PACKING 
It’s too cold to pack our cozy winter sweaters but go ahead and pack items that you no longer need such as clothes that don’t fit or toys that your children don’t play with. Also, create a better storage system for items that might be laying around like holiday decorations and family keepsakes. Start with the attic, basement, garage, and closets, and sort your belongings into three piles: what to keep, what to give away, and what to sell. Packing these items will make it easier to stage your home and move when the time comes. 

CLEAR OUT CLUTTER
It’s important that potential buyers can picture themselves living in your home. A very clean and orderly home can help with that. I always tell clients that the kitchen is a good place to start. Remove pictures from your fridge, clear counters of appliances and things you don’t use, and organize your junk drawer and pantry.   

IMPROVE YOUR HOME
It’s important to meet with a real estate broker who can recommend home improvements that need to be made before listing. You can do a lot on your own or for little cost, such as putting new caulk in the bathroom, replacing outdated hardware, or giving scuffed trim a fresh coat of paint. Sometimes, you’ll need to hire a vendor and I suggest interviewing professionals now and getting on their schedule before they’re too busy to help in the Spring.
